German Translation Support for UserPoints

Thanks for raising the question of translations. There are language files in UserPoints and its modules and the editor plugin. If your site is configured in Joomla for one of the supported languages, you should see text in the chosen language. However, it could be that recent versions had incomplete translations.

I have run the automated translation process and released version 5.0.1 to deal with any incompleteness. They are created using DeepL, which gives good results, but not as good as a person fluent in a language. Support with language translation is very welcome.

To aid that, I have pulled out all the language strings for all currently supported languages, and created a git repository at https://codeberg.org/counterpoint/UserPointsLanguage. You will find detailed information on the process of submitting translations in LANGUAGE_README.md in the root of the UserPoints package. That is a good starting point, but I am happy to try to answer any questions.

Anyone who wants an additional language should submit a support ticket to start with, so that I can create a DeepL translation to start off with - it is a lot less work to review than to start from nothing.

I hope this at least starts to answer the questions. Feel free to ask more.

I will install and test version 5.0.1 and review the German translations during normal use of UserPoints.

I am particularly interested in the competition, raffle, ranking and points-related features, so I will probably find some language strings that can be improved.

I will create a Codeberg account and look into contributing German translation updates through pull requests.

That's great. Just one caveat - please keep the translations true to the English versions. If you think the English is wrong or misleading, then ask me to change it. But if you want different text to suit your own projects, that is best done by language string overrides through Joomla.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes perfect sense, and I will focus on correcting translation issues, terminology, grammar and wording while keeping the meaning of the English strings intact.

One question regarding the German translation:

In German software there are usually three possible styles:

• informal ("Du")

• formal ("Sie")

• neutral wording without directly addressing the user

The current translation seems to contain a mixture of all three styles.

Do you have a preference for the official German language pack? Personally, I would lean towards consistent wording, but I would like to follow the style you prefer for the project before making larger changes.
