Modification available: crosslinking between items - 2007/01/22 19:09 Hi!

I can offer you a script, which allows you to automatically have items crosslinked in the glossary.

The script is not scanning the whole text everytime the user visits your glossary (like the integrated content-bot does), because if you have thousands of entrys this would cost a lot of performance.
You can run the script as a cronjob every night or simply start it, after you added some new items to your glossary.

If you are interested, please contact me at info@e-brainstorm.de - and please accept that I can not offer this script for free because I had to pay a programmer myself for that work.

Greetings,
mat-c

Re:Modification available: crosslinking between it - 2007/06/21 00:05 Please note that Glossary is distributed free but is copyright and subject to the GNU/GPL licence. Any work based on Glossary must therefore be open source and controlled by GPL. It is a breach of GPL to sell a derivative work.

I have put a large amount of valuable time into creating open source software, and the principle of open source is that everyone who puts resources into a project should share the results with everyone else (except that you may choose not to distribute at all). Why do you think you are entitled to use my work for nothing and yet to recoup your costs?

On the face of it, you are breaching my copyright. This is a formal request to desist from any such breach.

Re:Modification available: crosslinking between it - 2007/06/21 08:45 oh, ok, I understand your point. but the script is only working on the fields in the DB and your code is not modified at all. you could use the script to crosslink every other module or the basic content itself by changing some values. for example if you make your own glossary with items in a category you could let the script search through the other items and crosslink them with the corresponding item.

don't get me wrong, i really appreciate your great work and we started the script as an extension for your glossary, but now we have a very flexible tool which is completely independent from your component.

Re:Modification available: crosslinking between it - 2007/06/21 23:31 That may be borderline. But so far as I can see, your script is an extension of Glossary in the sense relevant to GPL.

Don't you think it rather unreasonable to be using the forum which I provide free of charge in support of free open source software to sell something that originally derived from my software?

Re:Modification available: crosslinking between it - 2007/06/22 09:41 we are finishing our component at the moment and I would suggest that I'll send you a copy so you can see that it is no extension of your script (as it was planned in the beginning) but a stand-alone component, if you are alright with that.

feel free to delete this topic but I would have been happy if someone would have provided such a component like ours as I was searching for a crosslinking-function.
As you certainly remember I was asking if you are going to improve the glossary in the near future and you told me, that you don't have the time to do so. So I started to look for a solution myself and the only way for me was to pay a programmer to develop something for me. From that point my idea has grown to a completely independent component which you can use togheter with a lot of other content-relevant components out there.

I guess that if someone would ask for a crosslinking feature here in the near future, it may be that some user would recommend our commercial solution anyway, but thats only speculative of course.

There are a lot of great commercial Joomla components out there and it is always the decision of the developers if they provide them under GPL - and this may also have a commercial background because often they provide extra commercial services and adjustments and use their OpenSource-Project to get the needed awareness. Often Open Source is part of a marketing strategy, I think that you also got some valuable customers because your free glossary script became that popular...

Sorry for the long text
