Moving files from database to filesystem? - 2006/10/16 21:58 My host suspended my account today. My remository database reached 2gb with the files I have stored in it. I was a little surprised because I could see me easily having nearly 10gb in there by the end of the year.

I've checked out a few places and it looks like I will have to go dedicated if I want a database that large. I simply cannot afford to do that so i'm going to have move the files out of the database and into the file system.

Is there a simple way for me to do this? I'd hate to lose my site because the database it easting up too much cpu time

Re:Moving files from database to filesystem? - 2006/10/17 13:01 Is the problem the size of the files or the processing? The database overhead on size is not particularly large, especially if you actively manage your database.

The processing overhead is only significant if you are handling a lot of large downloads, in which case you may be better using the file system. If so, I'd try to make sure you have hosting that provides PHP-suexec of some kind.

It should be possible to get more disk space on shared servers - I'd try negotiating - look at other hosts if necessary. If you're really blowing the limits both for disk space and processing that are acceptable on a shared server, you will need to review the whole operation

Re:Moving files from database to filesystem? - 2006/10/17 15:53 Yes i'm serving quite large files. Upto 8mb in size and there are roughly 400 of them in the database as of now and I will adding many more soon.

They kicked me for server overload, but would not eloborate further.

I have my own virtual private server now, so I will be ensuring PHP-suexec is switched on.

The problem I have now is how do I get the existing files out of the database and into the filesystem easily in remository?

Some helpful guys suggested the best way to maybe deal with hosting large downloads here

But i'm not sure how it would tie into how remository works. I'm new to running my own server, so if you could scan that thread and offer me some advice, I would be very greatful

Re:Moving files from database to filesystem? - 2007/11/15 19:33 Hello,

I am in need of moving files from the database to a file system as well. Our website has went down many times today being the most recent. All of the files that we host are about 1mb in size at the large end of the spectrum, so I don't believe it has to do with file size. I've been told that the accessing files from the database is what is causing our server to go down.

Please tell me there is an easy way to do this then download all 195 files then re-upload them.
