force download of media? - 2006/02/19 21:24 I searched the forums and google and couldn't find anything about forcing downloads of media (mp3, quicktime video) with Remository. Is this something that can be done?

I currently have a video file and a mp3 for download in my remository, but in IE they try to stream/open instead of prompt to Save As.

It would be real handy if Remository could force the download. I figured that it would, but it's not. Perhaps I am missing a setting somewhere?

I removed the following code:

but IE still trys to stream the MP3.

 Re:force download of media? - 2006/02/24 20:19 Were you ever able to resolve this issue, and how? I will soon be tackling this with PDF files and it seems that many users are also having the same problem with these. Maybe the Admin (or someone else who knows what they're doing ) will take a note of this and add a setting in v.3.4 to “force download” of all files without streaming anything.

 Re:force download of media? - 2006/03/20 04:40 Have you figured this out yet? I have the same problem.

I tried editing that .php file but any changes I make to it are not read by Remository, it would seem.

The suggested change did nothing and neither did adding the .mp3 extension to the list of restricted file extensions. I was still allowed to download it.

Re:force download of media? - 2006/03/20 14:24 I was unable to get Remository to force downloads. So, dare I tell you, I've switched to DOCMAN, which forces downloads without any additional tinkering.

 Re:force download of media? - 2006/03/21 15:55 I haven’t tried this yet, but I came across a possible solution at http://www.unrealtower.org/pdfdownload. This should bring up the window that asks what you want to do with the file, open or save it.
Basically they suggest creating a .htaccess file in the directory of your pdfs or other media and add the lines:
SetEnvIf Request_URI “.pdf$” requested_pdf=pdf
Header add Content-Disposition “Attachment” env=requested_pdf
If anyone tries this out before I get a chance to, please post a reply and let others know if it worked for you.

Re:force download of media? - 2008/12/04 06:05 That's probably in the right direction...but since the physical files aren't stored in directories, would an .htaccess solution work? Where would you put it?

Or is there a simple answer to this issue that I'm missing?

Re:force download of media? - 2008/12/30 11:41 It may well be that there is more to discover about this issue. But with my present state of knowledge, there is no single answer to these questions that will work in all cases.

The way a downloaded file is treated depends on a lot of factors, including the headers sent from the web server (which can be controlled by Remository) but also including which browser is in use, and how the browser and operating system are configured.

In some cases, the browser may be looking not only at the headers provided by Remository, but also at the MIME type of the file itself (which again is not under the control of Remository).

If I could obtain any additional (reliable) information on the subject that would help, I would modify Remository. Martin Brampton aka Counterpoint
