Wrong thumb path - 2010/08/18 14:27 By default remository insert thumbs and images in
components/remository_files

Spiders can't get this in joomla, by default joomla in robots.txt have

Disallow: /components/

search engines don't index any images in this folder.

In listings wrong alt description is always "file". need to be diferent.

Dir for each thumb and image haven't dummy file

The assumption is that the thumbnail image is supplementary to the file title and description. Do you want the images to be indexed?

I'm not sure whether a more informative alt should be provided in the context, since the file title and short description are in close proximity to the image.

But, if we want that images in index we need a place not blocked by robots.txt and a alt tag (with description, name whatever image was), in fileinfo alt is ok.
Even not far away from title and description, image isn't large, if alt is not diferent, spiders read like design not a unique image.
I create /imgs/remository and change to this dir, can be other folder not blocked by robots.txt. Seems noone in joomla team see images default dir is blocked too by default.
Dummy file for the images folders, in my case isn't a problem, site is free, but in some cases can be a problem.

User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /components/com_remository_files/

or - since I'm not sure if that would work for any other bot - you could also try removing
Disallow: /components/
and add each component individually except com_remository_files

Until 6 months ago work fine, now if we disallow main dir we can allow nothing inside, test it with images and see results.

I have a site without remository, (fishing, sports, etc etc) 20-30 % of visitors came from search images. until 6 months ago i have a sub dir /images/sports...etc etc.
In jan/feb lost 2000-3000 visitors/day why ?, because images gone from search. i remove disallow: /images from robots and work fine, before i had allow for subdir wich don't work with main dir blocked.

Block one by one com_components works for sure, but need more attention, after install a new one or changes we can't forget . Isn't dificult change images dir. In next week i put code here, i'm fishing this week.......

Test it....
