support download management tools - 2009/10/11 01:10 I noticed that I can't use other tools to download files which were managed by Remository, I have to download each file ONLY with the browser itself.

If the file is very large, for example, over 500MB, the direct download by browser always can't do this, especially when we need to resume the downloading due to connection breakup or other reasons.

People always love to use some download management tools to download big files, such as Flashget (http://www.flashget.com/), Thunder (http://dl.xunlei.com/). Can Remository support these tools?

Thanks.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/12 16:35 Remository already supports any download mechanism that uses HTTP requests, including range requests for parts of a file. Martin Brampton aka Counterpoint

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/13 00:10 A little strange. Members on my website complained that they can't download large files with Thunder (a popular downloading management tool in China).

I am using Joomla 1.0.x and Remository v3.52.6 for J1.0, and enabled core SEF of Joomla 1.0.

Maybe the SEF prevented this function?

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/14 20:13 OK, I have looked for information on Thunder. So far as I can see, it is a Bit Torrent tool. Remository does not presently support Bit Torrent.

Implementing Bit Torrent is not altogether straightforward, and for an application that includes access control features, it is not immediately clear how appropriate it is to use a protocol oriented towards file sharing. In some case, there is no problem, but for others it would be important to be sure that the use of Bit Torrent did not blow a gaping hole in the Remository access controls.

Another issue is that network carriers are tending to place constraints or blocks on Bit Torrent traffic for various reasons.

If Bit Torrent is to be supported by Remository, the most likely route would be through use of Amazon S3. Although not everyone would want to set up an S3 account. It would be quite a complex extension of Remository.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/15 05:17 No, Thunder is not ONLY a BitTorrent downloading tool.

Surely it supports BitTorrent, but it is at first been used as a FTP/HTTP downloading management tool.

You can try it yourself. It can download from many websites, such as sourceforge.net.

So I wonder why it can't work with Remository?

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/15 12:53 Can you provide a reliable source for a version of Thunder that is usable by a non-Chinese speaker?

If you can provide a safe source, I will experiment with it.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/17 03:30 Ok, finally I know that Thunder has an international version, which was named GigaGet. You can download it at: http://www.gigaget.com/.

GigaGet must has the same working mechanism as Thunder. So you can test with GigaGet to see if it can download files from Remository.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/10/25 13:32 I just wonder, how did you make it possible to download large files (eg.: >500M with Remository?

You don't use any tool, but ONLY the browser to download such a big file?

If you use any tool, what is it?

What kind of download tools can work with Remository to download large files?

Thanks.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/11/17 02:02 Today I noticed that DOCman can support Thunder, the popular download management tool in China.

I remember that jDownloads also support Thunder.

Do you have a plan to add support for download management tools in next release of Remository?

I think this feature is important, especially when downloading large files and want to have pause/resume support.

Thanks.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/11/18 20:38 I've downloaded Gigaget, but I'm not clear what to look for. It appears to require to be given a URI to download a file. If I give it a Remository download URI, it downloads the file. Is there something else? Martin Brampton aka Counterpoint

Re:support download management tools - 2009/11/18 21:58 Oh, maybe I missed something?

Members on my website complains that my download area(built with Remository for J1.0) can't support Thunder, even can't support IE browser, so they can't download large files.

Ok, I will try more tests before feedback again about this issue.

Thanks for your help.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/11/27 12:02 hi, Martin,

Could you please mke a test with one file on my website managed by Remository:

http://www.joomlagate.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,48/func,fileinfo/id,1028/

Please try to download it, and see which Downloading Tool can work with this version of Remository.

Any tool, if you find any downloading tool can do a Pause/Resume job with Remository, please tell me.

Thanks.

Re:support download management tools - 2009/11/27 21:18 Yes, I can download that file using Gigaget without any problems.

However, you have to bear in mind that you cannot use the initial download link on the page that you quoted for Gigaget, because that is a link to another page that then triggers the download, not a link to the file itself.

You need to click on the download link, cancel the automatic download via the browser, and then use the link on the download page to start a Gigaget download.

The reason for the indirect approach is that the file information page offers a fixed download link that is ok to be copied and spread around the internet. It will always bring anyone who uses it to your site.

When it is used, it brings up a page that automatically starts the download. The link on the download page is not a permanent link, it changes regularly. The reason for that is to prevent others from using your file download (including using your bandwidth) to deliver your files without acknowledging where they came from.

That's the point!

I also tested before, but I used the auto-download link. So I did not see Thunder(Gigaget) worked.

Thanks for your trick. Now I cancel the auto-download link and use click the download button again, my Thunder worked smoothly!

Great!

Then, I want to improve this feature further:

How can we disable the auto-download function and force the user to click Download button again to trigger Thunder?

Is there such an option in settings? If not, please add such a feature.

Thank you very much!

Today I tested this method again, this time with a file located on external server.

For example, a file is:

Code:

 http://www.opendrive.com/files/6129803_FN730_d3c9/ Display_News_Module_CSS_modification_tutorial_joomlagate_VIP.1204.zip

Then in Remository, I added a new remote file with above URL.

Next, at frontend, I tried to download this file with the trick you mentioned, but the download tool Gigaget did not initialized. Instead, I noticed that my IE8 browser "opened" this zip file as a webpage, just showing me some unreadable characters, like display a txt file directly inside browser instead of downloading it.

Hi, Martin, if you have some spare time, please test this trick again with the above external file I provided to see if this method can still work.

Thanks.
