Performance Question. 2 gig Database? - 2005/11/07 21:49 Performance Question.

I imported 9,000 Files for a test… (100 megs on my live server)
And that’s about 1/10 of the documents I have.

That will be over 1 gig (50,000 files)

Then I have 1.5 gig of programs, Shareware, Freeware…

How can I have it so just the files are referenced in the SQL database and not the actual file?

I will provide links as soon as I get Joomla installed on a live server…

Thanks for the great effort..

(I’m correct that Joomla is the software Mambo users will be transferring over to?)

I’m still foggy about all the Mambo Joomla versions or rumors but Im testing on both systems (They look the same to me any way)

Thanks!

Jason…

Re:Performance Question. 2 gig Database? - 2005/11/08 03:45 The version of Remository you have at present will ONLY store files in the database. Is there any particular reason you don't want the files there?

Some people have chosen to move to Joomla, others are staying with Mambo, some have moved and then moved back. As I am now leader of the Mambo core development team, my sites will be staying with Mambo

Re:Performance Question. 2 gig Database? - 2005/11/08 05:02 No reason about the data base,

Two things....

I have NO idea whatsoever having 3 gig SQL tables will do on a busy page, (Every file is VERY VERY small)

Thanks for the info on Mambo..

I also have no idea about the mambo VS Joomla issues.
My Internet has been down all day and I'm just a week into Mambo.,

Thx again..

7570 files!!! Have to love that!!!

Re:Performance Question. 2 gig Database? - 2005/11/08 16:25 There should be no big issue. MySQL will handle tables that take up to 4 Gb without any special attention. If you are going above that, it is only a matter of some simple admin commands to increase the table space.

Storing files in the DB involves a small overhead of disk space - only really an issue for people who have severe hosting limitations on DB size.

Performance is not really an issue, since the files are stored in a separate table from all the metadata - so it is only upload and download operations that hit that table. Even then, the index should handle it efficiently.
