Re:Polish letters BIG problem! - 2009/02/19 10:46 I've been thinking about it.

Handling HTTP headers to correctly render file names taking account of different character sets is an obscure topic on which I'm finding it difficult to get useful information.

With regards to the discrepancies you are seeing between your file system and the web site, I think that may be a result of your file system not using UTF-8 as its character set. Your web site is using UTF-8 and if there is a discrepancy between the character set of the web site and the file system, then it is likely that file names will not be handled correctly.

Re:Polish letters BIG problem! - 2009/02/19 11:28 THX a lot, but what do you mean by " I think that may be a result of your file system not using UTF-8 as its character set" What file system are talking about? My joomla is UTF-8. Do I have to change something in database or anywhere else? Is there anything I can do to deal with this problem? I found on forum that similar problems are with german or croatian.
Thx for your help in advance.

Re:Polish letters BIG problem! - 2009/02/19 11:44 The file system is part of the operating system on the web server. It's what allows you to have files and directories on your data storage.

Since the file system gives things names, which are strings of characters, it has to be using some character set. Your web site is using UTF-8 as its character set for all the things that it reads and writes. But if the file system is using a different character set (say ISO 8859-2) then the web software will misinterpret file names.

If you do not have a very large number of files, and they are not unusually large, then I would suggest storing the files in the database instead. The database will be configured to work in UTF-8 so as to be consistent with the web server, so there should be no inconsistencies that way.

You can find out more about this issue in a Gnome document - you need to scroll down a bit to find the descriptive stuff.

Re:Polish letters BIG problem! - 2009/02/19 12:35 Thank you very much for your time. I did what you suggested and switched to "store files in Database" but i still have the same error in IE - (firefox displaying correct)

I called admin and he told that file system is UCS2

any ideas?
